WILLIAMSTOWN BOARD OF HEALTH SUMMARY OF NITROUS OXIDE REGULATION Effective June 1, 2026 The Williamstown Board of Health has adopted a regulation restricting the sale of nitrous oxide products within the Town of Williamstown to reduce misuse and protect public health and safety. Key provisions include: Nitrous oxide may only be sold by approved businesses, specifically kitchen supply stores for legitimate culinary uses and medical supply stores for approved medical purposes. Sales of nitrous oxide are prohibited in convenience stores, gas stations, smoke shops, and other retail establishments that do not qualify as approved sales locations. The sale of nitrous oxide to any person under twenty-one (21) years of age is prohibited. Sellers must verify the age of all purchasers using valid government-issued photographic identification and must maintain records of age verification for at least one year. Self-service displays of nitrous oxide products are prohibited. Violations of the regulation may result in monetary fines and where applicable, suspension of nitrous oxide sales privileges. Repeated or egregious violations may result in additional enforcement action. The regulation was adopted by the Williamstown Board of Health pursuant to its authority under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 111, Section 31.
