TOWN OF STAMFORD Concise Summary of Town Highway Ordinance In accordance with 24 V.S.A. 1971-1976, the Select Board of the Town of Stamford adopted the Stamford Town Highway Ordinance on January 16, 2025. The purpose of this ordinance is to further and support the proper accomplishment of responsibilities and the discharge of authority prescribed by 19 V.S.A. Chapter 7, Laying Out, Discontinuing and Reclassifying Highways by Local Authorities. Said ordinance includes the sections: Definitions, General Considerations, Road Acceptance Policy, Minimum Standards, and General Provisions. Citizens may require a Permissive Referendum - that is, a vote on the ordinance - at the annual or a special town meeting by means of a petition signed by not less than 5 percent of the qualified voters of the town and presented to the Select Board or the town clerk within 44 days following the date the ordinance was adopted. The Select Board shall schedule the vote within 60 days from the date the petition is received. The ordinance will become effective on March 17, 2025 unless a petition is filed.
